Seventh/Eighth Grade Reading Lists
Part of the academic curriculum of Mars Hill Bible School is the summer reading program. As we all know, reading is an essential aspect of everyday life, especially education. I believe that reading is a crucial part of a student's education at Mars Hill.
Research has demonstrated that during the three months of summer vacation, students lose some of their academic skill when they do not read and study on a regular basis.
Summer reading for middle school at Mars Hill works as follows: students are required to read one book over the summer. When students return in the fall, they will take an AR test on the book they read. *Be aware that students are NOT to read abridged versions or watch the movie version of the book. The score they receive on this test will count as a test grade in English for the first quarter of the year. If they do not read the book and/or take the test, it will result in a zero for a test grade.
7th Grade Required Reading: A Long Walk to Water – Linda Sue Park
Students may read more than one book over the summer and take AR tests on those as well (up to four). These additional quizzes will count as extra credit for their English grade for the first quarter. The books must be on at least a 4th grade level and must be chapter books. No Who Was/What Was, I Survive, etc..
8th Grade Required Reading: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations: Do Hard Things – Alex and Brett Harris
Students must complete one discussion question from each chapter. This will be turned in the first week of school and will count as a test grade. If they have lost the copy given to them: https://www.therebelution.com/_old/downloads/do_hard_things_study_guide.pdf
To help prepare for our trip to Washington, D.C., students can read any of the following books for extra credit. They must AR test the first week of school.
- Voices from the March on Washington – J. Patrick Lewis and George Ella Lyon
- Chasing Lincoln’s Killer – James L. Swanson
- Lincoln’s Grave Robbers - Steve Sheinkin
- The Worst Class Trip Ever – Dave Barry
