Support Mars Hill

Sure, you can factor in the productive lives of MHBS graduates – the fact that between one-fifth and one-third of the graduates enter a professional school (law, medicine and other health-related fields, engineering, etc.) can be calculated; so can the millions of dollars in college scholarships earned each year. Many other secular features can be factored in such as the increasing number of doctorates earned by MHBS graduates, the value of their cutting-edge research successes, and so on. Each of these is easily measured.
But how can you place a value in the positive moral influence that MHBS graduates exert in their communities and schools and work places? How can you put a price tag on the many souls that will be in heaven because of a unique school like Mars Hill?
Mars Hill makes an enormous difference because it demands excellence – in its students, in its faculty and in its administration. It expects the best, inspires the best, even demands the best. And it does so without access to vast amounts of tax dollars or excessive tuition. The school reaches the peaks of excellence because hundreds, if not thousands, of alumni, friends and relatives of students believe in its mission,
There are many ways to support Mars Hill: (Please click on the links below for additional information)

kbarfield@mhbs.org. Performing Arts Center Building Fund Mars Hill Bible School alumnus James Bobo (’62) and his mother, Mrs. Lena Bobo, provided Mars Hill with a $1,000,000 gift to go toward the construction of a badly needed Performing Arts Center/Auditorium. Other donors and foundations have joined the Bobo family to pledge or contribute toward the project but additional assistance is needed.
The 1,100-seat Performing Arts Center would include dressing rooms, rehearsal and storage areas, a large lobby for patrons, office space and storage. The estimated cost for the structure ranges between $5-6 million. The Performing Arts Center would replace the outdated, outsized Morris Auditorium which has been in use since 1959. Naming opportunities are still available for various parts of the facility.
The Capital Improvement Board was established by Dr. Barfield and the Mars Hill Board of Directors in 2007 to assist the school in planning for long-range needs for the school’s physical plant. The advisory Board offers an opportunity for its members to secure networking with foundations and individuals interested in the long-term goals of the school. Chairman Mrs. Jackie Lewis Vice Chairman Mr. Rick Hamm
President’s Development Council One of the main reasons, Mars Hill Bible School rests on a solid financial footing can be attributed to the 100+ members of the Development Council. Generous members of this group pledge a minimum of $100 per month to support school programs. The Council meets annually in the fall.
The oldest financial support group at Mars Hill Bible School is the Endowment Association. Members of the Endowment Association have provided the school over $1,000,000 since organization’s founding in the 1950s. Members pledge a minimum of $100 per person over a ten-year period. Funds obtained by the Endowment Association are earmarked to paying for buildings and capital improvements. The organization meets three times each year.
Endowed Scholarships provide funds for students whose families financial circumstances would otherwise prevent then from obtaining a Christian education. Funds contributed to this fund are placed in the school’s Endowment. The principal and 10% of the annual interest remain in the Endowment with 90% of the interest used to provide need-based scholarships. Currently, endowed scholarships, established by friends and family members, honor the following individuals:
Charles Blackburn
In lieu of perishable memorials, many families appreciate the honoring of loved ones through meaningful contributions to educational institutions. A memorial gift can provide a book for the school libraries, educational supplies for students and faculty, and other more permanent memorials. Each year families and friends of the school, alumni and others who believe in the mission of Mars Hill Bible School use this as a means to provide a useful and meaningful memorial while assisting Christian education.
A number of options for planned giving (trusts, gifts of appreciated stock and IRA’s) exist that both serve the financial needs of donors and help Mars Hill Bible School with its mission. For more information, contact David Willingham at (256) 767-1203 ext. 203.
Tax-Free Distribution from IRA’s for Charitable Purposes The current tax law that expires this year permits individuals to make direct IRA distributions to charity without having to include the distribution in gross income. In particular, the tax law permits up to $100,000 to be contributed directly to charity for the 2007 tax year. Please consult your tax advisor for additional information or contact David Willingham at (256) 767-1203 ext. 203.
