YOUNG SQUAD OPENS 2012 SEASON IN WINNING FASHION; LADY PANTHERS WIN ATHENS BIBLE SCHOOL AND THARPTOWN INVITATIONALs (Updated 1/15/2013)

context

Coach Matt Burgess's Lady Panthers softball team remains one of the younger teams on campus with the majority of players in grades 9-11, but they opened the season with four straight regular-season wins, including a 1-0 shut out of Athens Bible School, a 10-0 shut out of Red Bay and a 10-1 victory over Cherokee. They took top honors in the Athens Bible School Invitational, defeating Randoplh, host Athens Bible and Tanner. The 20 runs scored against Tanner were the most runs scored by the Lady Panthers. Mallory Spurlock picked up the wins in the first two games, striking out 22 batters in the two games. Leslie Taylor led the hitters in the Tanner game with two singles, a double, a triple and five RBIs. The Lady Panthers also won the Tarptown Invitational in late April with wins over Colbert County and Tharptown.

In the Hatton tournament, they held the defending state champions (Hatton) to a 3-3 tie. Sophomore Mallory Spurlock has been outstanding on the mound (a no-hitter and 16 Ks against Athens Bible, 18 Ks against Cherokee and a no-hitter and 14 Ks against Red Bay. Savanna Smallwood leads the team in RBIs (4) with Natalie Rikard, Alex Lauderdale, and Mallory Spurlock adding three each. Leslie Taylor and Mallory Spurlock have hits home runs.

With a year of experience under their belts and a lot of enthusiasm, they look forward to continuing their strong showing this spring. COME OUT AND SUPPORT LADY PANTHER SOFTBALL!
